The man whose body was recovered from Lake Carmel early Monday morning has been identified as Redding resident Jeremy R. Kipnis.

Emergency responders began searching the lake in Putnam County, N.Y., Saturday evening after the 54-year-old man went swimming and never returned home.

His wife reported him missing around 6:45 p.m., according to the Kent Police Department in New York.

Kipnis told his wife around 1 p.m. that he was going for a swim at Lake Carmel and would be home around 3 p.m. — but when he didn’t return home, his wife called police.

Officers located Kipnis’s car near Beach No. 5 but were unable to locate Kipnis. Lake Carmel Fire Department was then dispatched to the lake to search for the man.

With the assistance of several other agencies, the fire department searched in and around the water body for about four hours before suspending the search until morning.

The search resumed at 7 a.m. Sunday. The lake was closed to the public as responders scoured the lake. The search was suspended around 7 p.m. until Monday morning.

As police were patrolling the area Monday morning, an officer observed what appeared to be a body floating in the middle of the lake at about 5:30 a.m.

With assistance from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Carmel firefighters and the Lake Carmel Parks and Recreation Department, the body was recovered from the lake and Putnam County Coroner Dr. Michael Nesheiwat was called to the scene.

The Kent Police Department in New York is investigating his death.
